Many people use the word potential yet few realize that your potential defines who you are, what you
can excel at, and what is possible for you to become.
Even fewer understand the power that comes with solving the puzzle of who you are. Knowing what your potential is changes your life. It helps you grasp the life you can realistically aspire to, choose attainable goals and get inspired to start working on making your dreams come true.
So What Exactly Is Potential?
Potential comes from the root words "potency" and "potent". These words describe the power, strength and possibilities that come from using your natural abilities.
So when someone says you have "lots of potential" they are really saying you have lots of natural ability to excel and many possibilities to choose from. When they say you have "no potential" they are suggesting you have no natural abilities, no possibilities and no future.
When people talk about your potential, they are usually describing ...
What you can excel at: the professions, sports, hobbies and relationships you
can be great at
Who you can be and become: the lifestyles, mind set and activities that fit you
What it is possible for you to achieve: all the things you can
succeed at
So your potential describes all the things you
can be successful at -- things such as telling stories, making friends, calculating odds, selling ice cream or making touchdowns. When combined together, all these things define what you have the natural talent to become and excel at.
Who Has Potential?
Everyone has potential whether they know what it is or not. In fact, we suspect everyone has so much potential that it far exceeds what they can explore and manifest in one lifetime. Which means that you must choose what aspects of your potential you want to focus on in this lifetime, and which of hundreds of possibilities is the one extraordinary life you want to create.
The Different Types of Potential
And although most people refer to potential in terms of livelihood, we actually think you have several types of potential -- one for each major area of your life ...
Work Potential:
This
defines the jobs, professions, trades and crafts you can excel at -- whether that is a healer, a farmer, a
chef, an airline pilot, a computer programmer, a concert
pianist or one of a thousand other careers.
Relationship Potential:
This defines your natural gifts and talents for excelling at being a friend, employee, co-worker, team member, boss, mentor, sibling, spouse, parent, neighbor, and role model.
Body Potential:
Your athletic or body potential defines the types of sports and physical activities you can excel at: long distance marathons, needlework, yoga, mountain climbing or gymnastics. It also describes how your body best expresses and promotes its health by excelling in different areas such as strength, power, stamina, flexibility, adaptability, resiliency, regeneration, renewal, immunity, toxin handling and self healing.
Wisdom Potential:
This
describes the ways you can excel at acquiring, using and expressing wisdom in your life.
So How Do I Find My Potential?
The answer is simple -- you go looking for it both within yourself and outside of yourself. By taking an inner journey of self discovery, you find the answers already hidden inside of you. At the same time, you look outside of yourself at the world around you and your life -- past, present and future. Your potential reveals itself in your past -- in the things that you have loved, and the tasks you naturally do well without even trying. Your potential is also revealed in your current life -- the things and places you feel drawn to and the things that make your heart beat faster when you think about them. And your potential is even awaiting you in the future -- in the things you dream about doing.
To help you solve the puzzle of who you are, we offer a variety of materials -- from online pages and quizzes to a recipe for potential and step-by-step guidebooks.
The first area to start with is finding your work potential, often referred to as finding your dream job, career or business. Beginning with the area of work makes sense because it is where most people spend a majority of their adult life. Add in all the time spent preparing for, commuting to and doing work -- and you can see it is the primary focus for most people on Earth. Mastering this first area is critical, because it allows you to earn the money you will need to develop your potential in all the other areas of your life and afford to live the extraordinary life you dream of.
