Meaning of Each Tarot Card

 

 

I didn't know how much time had passed. Time seemed to have stood still while I read and learned more about the basic meaning of the tarot cards. So I was a little startled to hear the door thump closed and the rustling of things being moved aside.

No one spoke until I looked up.

Then, to my surprise, I was the first to break the silence. "I had no idea that the Tarot Cards existed, let alone how valuable they could be."

"What have you learned so far?" the Wise Woman asked me quietly.

"That events, situations have a pattern. That there is meaning in what happens in life ... and how it happens. And I have no idea what is going on ... but someone does."

"That's a good start!"

The enthusiasm in her voice startled me. She looked interested in what I had to say next. But nothing came. And after a minute or two of deep silence, her smile deepened.

"They have you, don't they?" she asked.

I wanted to pretend I didn't know what she was talking about, but my head started to move up and down on its own accord. And the tarot cards in front of me seemed to take on a life of their own. I took it all in, feeling both fuzzy headed and awake at the same time. My head and my life felt like it wanted to stretch itself out like a cat after taking a nap in a pool of sunshine. Part of me wanted to go back to sleep, to lie in the sun and doze on dreaming. But part of me felt like it wanted to move, to grasp something I cold not name or sea.

The Wise Woman sighed and slid a book across the worn surface of the table. "You will want to start with this. It gives you the basic and in depth meaning of each card in the major arcana, the major archetypes at play in this corner of the vibrant universe."

"Vibrant universe?" I asked.

"That part comes later. For now, if the cards and you have formed a mutual attraction, this is the place to star. It says you are serious and are open to wisdom."

"Open to wisdom?" I repeated. Why was I doing that?

"Yes. Open to wisdom instead of fortune telling. Wisdom, like water, seeks its own level. If you set the bar high, you get fortune telling because everyone wants to come out on top. If you et the bar low, you get wisdom, because wisdom pools where it is needed most."

Her words washed over me as I reached to and picked up the book.

"When you ra ready, the cards will take you to new places -- and that means you need to prepare for your travels and the adventures ahead of you. New understandings of the card meanings will emerge when you need them, although 20/20 hindsight is also possible with this book."

I started to open the cover and her words flowed over me. "Don't be shy about moving in parallel and contradictory directions. A deck is meant to be shuffled, rearranged, thrown into chaos and then sorted back into a new order."

"Sounds like what my life needs," I mumbled to myself.

"Exactly. Let me know How it words for you," she said as I was walking out the door.

How had I reached the door? As the thought went through my head, it closed behind me. I guessed it was a sign and looked up at the night sky that spiraled and swirled all around me at a pace too slow for me to see.

On the path before me and reflected on the trees were words I could barely make out. They beckoned me on ...
